Why NCL’s Pride of America Works for Hawaii

Most Hawaii cruises from California or Vancouver waste 8–10 days crossing the Pacific. Norwegian’s Pride of America runs year-round from Honolulu, hitting all four major islands in seven nights with almost no sea days. That efficiency makes it worth considering—if you understand what you’re getting.

The Itinerary: Six Port Days, Two Overnights

Pride of America’s weekly Saturday loop includes:

  • Two full days in Maui (overnight)
  • Hilo and Kona on the Big Island
  • Two days on Kauaʻi (overnight, plus Nā Pali Coast scenic cruising)
  • Roundtrip from Honolulu

It covers six ports in seven nights. The ship is U.S.-flagged, which lets it run this domestic loop without the foreign port stop that most cruise ships require under maritime law. It’s the only major ship that can do this.

Recent winter 2026–27 schedule changes adjusted port sequencing, but all four islands remain. The overnight stays let you rent a car for sunset at Haleakalā or explore beyond typical excursion zones.

What It Costs vs Land-Based Hawaii

Hawaii land visitors spend about $230 per person per day on average, not including inter-island flights at $150–$200 each way. Four islands can mean $600–$800 in flights alone, plus four hotel stays and rental cars.

Pride of America 2026 pricing generally runs roughly $1,182–$2,800 per person depending on season and cabin type. Solo Studios (which include private lounge access) start around $2,100–$2,800 with no single supplement—which is rare in cruising.

With NCL’s Free at Sea bundles (drinks, Wi-Fi, dining, excursion credits), the all-in cost often beats booking four separate islands by land once you factor in flights, hotels, and meals.

Who This Works For

Time-crunched first-timers. See all four islands in one week without airport days or packing and unpacking four times.

Solo travelers. No single supplement on Studios, plus built-in social space in the Studio Lounge.

Multi-gen families. Mix inside cabins and suites on the same ship; everyone travels together without sharing rooms.

Port-focused travelers. If you’d rather explore destinations than lounge poolside, six port days deliver.

What You’re Actually Getting

The itinerary is excellent. The ship is functional, not luxurious.

A 2021 refurbishment updated cabins and public spaces, but Pride of America’s American-themed decor—celebrating U.S. cities and landmarks—skews kitschy. Service is friendly but less polished than newer NCL ships; food quality is consistently noted as the weak point compared to Prima-class vessels.

Because it’s U.S.-flagged, the crew is largely American. Some travelers prefer that familiarity; others miss the international service culture on foreign-flagged ships.

That said, with six port days and two overnights, you’re barely on board.

Some Alternatives

Hawaii is often included in longer transpacific or South Pacific itineraries on lines like Silversea and Holland America, some other options include:

Celebrity Cruises: Transpacific Repositioning with Hawaii Stops

Celebrity runs one-way repositioning cruises (Vancouver–Honolulu, Honolulu–Sydney) that touch two or three Hawaiian ports. You get Edge-class ship design and elevated service, but Hawaii is part of a longer Pacific crossing, not the focus. Eight–nine night segments typically include four to five sea days each way.

Best for: Combining Hawaii with a longer Pacific journey, or adding land time pre- or post-cruise.

UnCruise Adventures: Small-Ship Active Hawaii

UnCruise’s 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes on Safari Explorer (36 passengers) runs Kona–Molokai, visiting the Big Island, Maui, and Lanai. It’s an all-inclusive, adventure-focused product: kayaking, snorkeling, hiking, and local cultural visits. Recent reviews highlight active excursions and intimate group size.

Best for: Travelers wanting adventure activities over traditional cruise amenities, and those comfortable on very small ships.
