Robot Bartenders and Murder Mystery Dinners: The Cruise Restaurants You Never Knew Existed

The Bjarni & Drake team will travel anywhere for a good meal. Show us a menu featuring three Michelin-starred chefs or a robot bartender who speaks eight languages, and we’re already packing our bags. There’s something magical about discovering incredible food while you’re sailing between destinations – it’s like finding a hidden gem, except this one happens to be floating.

Part of our job is scouring cruise ships worldwide to find the most ridiculous, over-the-top, absolutely must-try dining experiences for our clients. So we’ve rounded up five of our favorite unique cruise restaurants for you.

Royal Caribbean’s Royal Railway Utopia Station
Found on: Utopia of the Seas

Let’s start with something that sounds completely made up but is 100% real. You’re eating dinner inside an actual vintage train car – complete with period-appropriate bench seating and windows that are really LED screens showing rolling landscapes. But here’s where it gets ridiculous: the seats have built-in subwoofers that simulate train movement, and live actors dressed as train characters interact with you throughout your meal.

We’re talking full storylines here. One night you might be dodging bandits in the Wild West while eating barbecue. Another evening, you’re traveling the Silk Road sampling Asian-inspired dishes. Some dinners even include murder mystery plots where you have to solve crimes between courses. At $150 per person for just 48 total guests, it’s basically dinner theater meets time travel.

Virgin Voyages’ The Social Club
Found on: All Virgin Voyages ships
unique cruise restaurants

Virgin basically took everything you loved about movie theaters and arcade nights, then made it infinitely better. The Social Club serves firecracker popcorn (spicy-sweet perfection), loaded fries, epic milkshakes, and comfort food.

You can play board games, sing karaoke, watch sports, or challenge friends to classic arcade games while sharing perfectly seasoned snacks. The firecracker popcorn deserves special mention – it’s a gourmet take on movie theater classics. Plus, everything is complimentary.

Seabourn’s Caviar in the Surf
Found on: Select Seabourn itineraries

This isn’t technically a restaurant – it’s something more extra. Seabourn’s crew wades into crystal-clear Caribbean or Asian waters carrying surfboards loaded with champagne and caviar. You’re standing waist-deep in tropical paradise while eating the finest delicacies.

Steel bands provide the soundtrack while you balance champagne flutes in one hand and spoon caviar with the other. Meanwhile, a full beach barbecue is happening on shore. Where else can you Insta yourself eating caviar while standing in the ocean?

Explora Journeys: Chef’s Kitchen
Found on: Explora I and Explora II

This ocean-front culinary academy seats just 12 guests working alongside Master Chefs of France – an exclusive designation held by only 409 actively working chefs worldwide. These aren’t your average cooking instructors.

Each class responds to your current destination. Shopping for Sicilian zucchini blossoms in local markets? You’ll learn to prepare them that afternoon in the teaching kitchen with ocean views. The chefs visit markets daily, ensuring ingredients reflect authentic regional flavors.

You’ll wear professional aprons, work at communal prep tables, then enjoy your creations in a private dining room with wine pairings. Take home recipe cards, professional techniques, and serious bragging rights about cooking with culinary legends.

MSC’s Robotic Bartender: Rob
Found on: MSC Virtuosa

Meet Rob, he happens to be a humanoid robot bartender. This guy speaks eight languages, displays emotions through LED facial expressions, and mixes cocktails with precision that would make Tom Cruise in Cocktail weep.

The MSC Starship Club features 3D holograms, an interactive digital art wall, and Rob entertaining guests with space facts while crafting both classic drinks and futuristic cocktails. He remembers your drink preferences and gets funnier as the evening progresses. It’s like having a conversation with the future of hospitality.

Ready to Eat Your Way Around the World?

Ready to book your next culinary adventure? The Bjarni & Drake team is standing by to help you choose the perfect cruise for your taste buds. Because life’s too short for boring dinners – especially when you’re floating in the middle of the ocean.
